Today we have received our Eurodance Trophy and our children are very excited about this.

Once again I would like to express my congratulations to all participating schools for their wonderful performances. All the school have represented their culture through their dances and brought our countries closer. It was really an exciting project and we are looking forward to be continued next year…

We are really thankful for this project and for friendly comments (which were under the first video from our school :):))

Hello! I'm Roberta and I'm in the class 1h. I have been very happy to take part in this adventure,because I think that nothing unites more than music, dance and culture. These three universal values are at the basis of this project, that represents an exciting way to feel united beyond ideological, religious and rational barriers. With eTwinning something magic happened before us: we saw a moltitude of friends of ours, ready to know about us and to let us know all the details about them. In a word, with eTwinning our classrooms have widened, as if by magic, until they have touched and linked with the ones in all the European schools that have joined this project.

We are very happy to show you a little part of our culture. To do that, we have dug in our traditions to learn what "Tarantella" represented for Naples in the last centuries and how it was danced. At the end, with all the material and the support of all our teachers, we have realized this video. Besides the dance, here is our love, the joy to communicate and the certainty we have had a unique and unforgettable experience!

"Carrasquinha" is a folk dance, calm ring dance with delicated gestures that the girls like a lot. As it said "dance the grandparents in all of the pilgrimages".
Is a ring dance of XIX century. It was dancing in the terraces on Sundays in the afternoon where girls and boys met together.

Here is the Norwegian entry. We danced at Tomb, an old estate close to our school. Today it serves as an agricultural school. We really enjoyed practising for the dance, and watching the videos from all our partner schools as they kept comming on the blog.
Our first dance is a traditional Norwegian song dance, called "Lasse går i ringen". The dancers tease the person in the circle, because he has no partner. The second dance is an old folk dance, called "Rugen". We whish you all the best of luck, and hope you enjoy our film. Tomorrow we will celebrate the 17th of May in Norway. We will dress up in our national costumes and there will be parades all over Norway, since this is our Constitution Day. We will post some pictures and information about this on the blog later this week. Hope you will celebrate with us, by watching our beautiful pupils all dressed up, just for you!

Our dance is a traditional Scottish Country Dance called "Strip the Willow." You will see the dance peformed twice by different groups of our Primary 7 pupils.

The boys wore blue and the girls wore white. (The colours of the Scottish flag) We tried to create this at the beginning of our dance!

We had lots of fun practising and learning this dance and we hope that you enjoy it.

Hello! It's beautiful in Poland. Everything in bloom. But a little rainy. But let's talk about our Polish dance Polonaise, performed by our students. Fryderyk Chopin, a Polish composer, loved composing polonaises, they expressed his serious mood and love to Poland while he was living in Paris in the 19th century.The video presents our student Klara playing Chopin's polonaise. Klara has already taken part in 4 international piano contests, even in Paris. They prepared this Polish traditional dance, and they were very motivated by the fact you would see them dancing. Bulgaria consists of 6 folklore regions- Thracian, Shopska, Northern, Strandja, Rodopska and Pirinska. Each one of them is unique and beautiful with a different dance tempo and music. Also every region is characterized by a special national costume with matchless features. Kazanlak is in the Thracian folklore region.
The dance with which we are taking part in this project is from the Rodop region. It’s based on a famous Bulgarian song and it is extremely suitable for the kids of this age. In this short presentation we have decided to make you familiar with our town and kindergarten and also to show us in action. Remember this still a repetition and it needs a lot of work, yet I hope you will like it.

Dear Eurodance Friends,

It has been such a pleasure for us and our students to take part in this project. We have had the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting and challenging school realities. Our dance is not a traditional one, as in Tuscany there are no traditional dances at least none that students know or still practise, probably in other parts of Italy, in the south of Italy for example or the islands dance tradtions are still alive. So we let the students decide what to do and as we are rehearsing for a final performance in June during the students' festival we thought we might send a sequence of the show we are working on. It is an adaptation of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and we have also painted the beautiful mask of the pharaoh you can see in the background. We are really eager to watch all your beautiful dances and we hope you will dedicate a few minutes to our video too. We ideally shake all your hands and magically dancing we hold you tight in a huge hug.

Hi! We are from a Polish John Paul II High School in Daleszyce.

Here we would like to tell you something about our dance, polonaise.
The polonaise is a stately Polish processional dance, performed by couples who walk around the dance hall; the music is in triple meter and moderate tempo. The dance developed from the Polish dance (taniec polski) of the 18th century; this form, in turn, was derived from the chodzony (walking dance) which was popular in the 17th century and known as a pieszy (pedestrian), or chmielowy (hops) dance. The latter form had its roots in the folk wedding dances, from which it separated and then entered the dance repertoire of the nobility. The folk variants continued to develop independently of the "Polish dance," resulting in such dances as chodzony, chmielowy (in the villages), and świeczkowy (in the towns).

We are ready to publish our video recording of a Polish dance Polonaise. We would like to share it with joy, yet the event that took place yesterday makes us really very sad and we will do it in 2 weeks.

Our President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Mary, and other 94 peole died in a plane crash in Smolensk, Russia. They wanted to take part in an official event connected with Katyn, Russia - where 70 years ago over 20, 000 Polish officers had been killed by shoothing at their heads. We knew a lot of people who were on the plane, bishops, MPs, people devoted to our country. We can't express what we feel; what's more, tomorrow we will have an earlier planned drama on Katyn presented by our students. Poland is mourning.

KLAIPEDA GEDMINAI MAIN SCHOOL - LITHUANIAN TRADITIONAL DANCE

Each nation creates the own national art, but the various factors influence them during evolution. Lithuanian folk art has changed in its form and content during the tradition periods. Ritual roundelays and dances gradually lost their mystical value and transferred to the dances and roundelays for recreation and fun. The genre of the traditional Lithuanian folk dance is still alive. People used to learn dances from parents and grandparents whose lives have been still greatly influenced by customs and traditions and who mastered dancing folk dances directly from their parents in outdoor country parties. Folk ensembles, who still participate in folklore collection expeditions in rural areas willingly dance these dances.

Lithuanians, as well as their Baltic neighbors, have always loved to dance. Young people gathered to dance in field parties (in summer), or in farmer houses (in winter). Older people and small children also took part in these festivities talking, socializing, and generally amusing themselves.

Looking still further back into the history, dance was also a part of ancient Lithuanian calendar celebrations and rituals.

Lithuanian folk dance "Kalvelis"

Kalvelis - in English it's mean a little blacksmith. It is very simple and very well-known Lithuanian dance. Looking at its name it might seem as it is a blacksmith's work depicting dance, but there isn't anything like this either in the movement or in the figures of the dance. Just a frequent clapping dancers' hands a little bit reminds the forging. The dance is rather quick, but it is easy to learn and funny to dance.

It's us again from San Antonio de Benagéber (Spain) and we want to show you our school with a video. We are 6th class and the oldest students in our school. We are 11-12 years old and we're not dancers but we want to try to dance it for all of you. We're going to dance a valencian folk dance called "La Magrana", it's a old symbolic dance dedicated to the people who worked making cloth, it's a dance performed by men, but we're going to change this, hahaha. It's great fun to dance and we hope you enjoy watching or maybe trying it yourself.

Sandfields Comprehensive - Welsh Folk Dancing

Year 7 pupils at Sandfields Comprehensive are going to perform a traditional Welsh Folk Dance. Evolving from natural, spontaneous behaviour on festive occasions, Welsh folk dancing, or dawnsio gwerin in Welsh, developed through the centuries into set moves for single sex groups and groups of men and women usually to the accompainment of simple, handmade musical instruments.

With the advent of Non-Conformist sects in the 18th and 19th centuries, Welsh folk dancing was seen as a 'sinful' form of entertainment, and attempts were made to stamp out the dances throughout Wales. Therefore, for nearly 200 years, Welsh folk dancing played a very small part in Welsh culture.

It took the formation of the Welsh Folk Dancing Society in 1949 to promote folk dancing once more in Wales, and with the continuing resurgence in interest in Welsh culture, the popularity of folk dancing is once again on the rise, being seen as an important element of our rich culture here in Wales.

The project will enable partners to share their culture and traditions and learn to respect other traditions. Students with special needs will better understand cultural diversity in Europe. This will improve their confidence. Students will work together, they will see how other students working in Europe. Hello to all our partner schools in Europe from us all here in Scoil Pádraig Naofa in Dysart Ireland. We are delighted to be joining you on this very interesting project. We have enjoyed looking at your introductory videos which give us a glimpse of your schools & the wonderful work you do there. We hope you enjoy looking at our school & some of the activities we do. We are a small school in central Ireland. There are 44 pupils in our school & we like working on our computers.
In Ireland we have different types of dance. One is Step Dancing. This is usually done by specially trained dancers who take part in competitions called 'Feiseanna'. The well known 'River Dance' is danced by professional step dancers. Another type is 'Ceili' dancing & these are danced by 'ordinary' dancers. Another is 'Set Dancing' & these are complicated dances which have to be learned. We will be dancing a 'Ceilí' dance & ours is a traditional dance called 'The Siege of Ennis'. It consists of rows of dancers, with 4 in each row. The dancers go through various 'steps' & after each round is finished, each row is facing a new row of dancers & the round starts all over again. We are all looking forward to our 'Eurodance' Project.

Our students will dance a suite of folk dances with Horă elements, specific to Romania.

Hora is a type of circle dance originating in the Balkans but also found in other countries. Hora (pl. hore) is a traditional Romanian folk dance that gathers everyone into a big closed circle. The dancers hold each other's hands and the circle spins, usually clockwise, as each participant follows a sequence of three steps forward and one step back. Hora exists in several variations specific to the regions of the country and dance steps vary depending on the type of Hora. The dance is usually accompanied by musical instruments such as the cymbalum, accordion, violin, viola, double bass, saxophone, trumpet or even the panflute. The Hora is popular during wedding celebrations and festivals, and is an essential part of the social entertainment in rural areas. One of the most famous hore is the Hora Unirii (Hora of the Union), which became a Romanian patriotic song as a result of being the hymn when Wallachia and Moldavia united to form the Principality of Romania in 1859. During the 2006/2007 New Year's Eve celebration, when Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union, people were dancing Hora Bucuriei (Hora of Joy) over the boulevards of Bucharest as a tribute to the EU anthem, Ode to Joy (Odă bucuriei).

Here is the presentation from Spetalen Skole,Norway, at last!
We have been watching all your contributions, and we are very happy to be part of this exciting project with all of you! So many wonderful dance traditions!
Spetalen School, is situated by the South East part of the Oslo fjord.
We have 308 students,divided on 14 classes, and 24 teachers all together.
The school has been involved in various national and international projects and networks,such as Comenius, ENIS and eTwinning, since our first Comenius project in 1995.
In Norway we also have old traditions when it comes to folk dance and folk music.
We have connected with our local folk dance group, "Raade Leikaring".
They will, in cooperation with our University college students, come to practice with our 5th and 6th graders.
We have chosen to show you one traditional Norwegian Songdance, called "Lasse går i ringen", and then we will pass on to a dance ,called "Rugen", an old folk dance from one of our counties,Vest-Agder.

Hello, Dancing Europe.
We are from Lithuania which lies on the East coast of the Baltic sea. We live in the harbour Klaipeda. Our school is named Vyturys which means a bird "skylark". We love singing very much, there are even 4 choirs in our school, also we have got many musicians. We take part in many different events in Lithuania. This time we've decided to dance. You think that teenagers don't like traditional or folklore dances....:) no you are not right.Every year at school we have dance festivals for primary school students and also we have dancing evenings with parents, friends or relatives. We are the students from form 7a. There are only 20 pupils in our class but we have little friends from 2a form, so together with them we are going to present 2 or 3 short Lithuanian folklore dances. We hope you'll enjoy our optimistic presentation.

Kindergarten №15 “Zvanche” was founded in 1969 in the city of Kazanlak, Bulgaria. The kindergarten is a school where well-trained teachers teach children from 3 to 7 years old. The kids in our group are 24 and they are at the age of 6. They are being taught Bulgarian folklore dances for second year. The dance lesson are twice a week and we are looking forward to making new friends.

Dear friends our school will represent to you the dance of “Tatsia”

“Tatsia” is a dance of skill, combining the correct hand and body non stop movement. The dancer holds a sieve in his hand with the four main fingers on the top of the inside perimeter of the sieve, while his thumb is on the top of the outside perimeter of the sieve. This is a very steady grip.

Then an assistant of the dancer (usually a woman), or even the dancer himself puts a glass of wine on the bottom of the inside perimeter of the sieve. The wine within the glass must not exceed the middle of the glass. Then the dancer performs a variety of moves with his hands holding the sieve, as he is dancing to the rhythm. The dancer can put in the sieve as many glasses of wine as he likes. In any case the glasses must NOT touch the top perimeter of the sieve. All of the moves must be performed with speed and grace or else the glass(es) may fall or the wine may be spilled. That isn't allowed to happen. The dance was created by the men in Cyprus in a form of competition or as a means to impress a woman. Some of the moves are hard to be performed even by professionals. “Tatsia” requires the dancer to have stamina, full control of his hands and knowledge of the footwork of the dance.

Hi everyone, we are class 6 from Athersley South Primary School in Barnsley, North England! We have 10 boys and 16 girls in our class and we are aged between 9 and 10.

We can't wait to start learning our dance and have been really excited by all of your fabulous posts and information. We have decided to learn Morris Dancing for our traditional dance.

A Morris dance is a form of English Folk dance and is accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping by a group of dancers. Sometimes the dancers use sticks, swords or handkerchiefs to enhance the dance.

We have some Morris Dancers and Musicians coming into school to do some workshops with us to help us learn. We are also going to make our own costumes to dance in. We'll take some photos and post them on here to show you!

Hello from Latvia, Madona Secondary School No.1. Madona is a small town in the centre of Latvia. Our school is quite big and its history longs for a hundred year. There are about 890 students aged between 7-19 years, 300 of them are primary school children. Our school has long lasting singing and dancing traditions. Every five years the Schoolchildren Song and Dance festival takes place in Riga, the capital of Latvia. It is a great honour and we hope to participate in this great performance this summer. We represent Primary school Spinut . It’s located in Split, the second-largest urban centre in Croatia.

“Evala” is the traditional greeting of our grandparents.

Our school is situated in the center of Split. Our primary School 'Spinut' recently celebrated its fortieth anniversary. There are about 600 pupils aged between 7 and 14 years.

Our pupils dance and sing in folk group. We started working 4 years ago because we wanted to enrich our children to original and ancient traditions through dancing.
This school year the new students from 9 years were enrolled in a traditional dance group and taught his first dance steps.

Old Split dances

The traditional dance in our city of Split was founded more than 100 years. It consists of three dances: "monfrina", "četvorka" and "šaltin polka" These dances are characterized by elegant moves, refined posture and softness of steps which show the influence of Western part of the Mediterranean.

We are going to dance a"Tarantella",a southern Italian couple folk dance, accompanied by tambourines. The term "Tarantella" comes from "tarantula"(or the Mediterranean black widow) spider. The original legend tells that someone who had been bitten by a tarantula had to dance to a upbeat tempo to sweat the poison out.
We hope our dance will be nice, even without tarantulas!

Project Overview

Our project idea is called Eurodance 2010! We are looking for schools from across Europe to join our pupils in performing and recording a traditional dance from their country.

The project will begin on Monday 15th of March 2010. Each school should introduce themselves to the other contestants by posting details of their school/class on the blog by Friday 26th March 2010. This could be a short video, picture or information typed into the blog. They should also include details of their chosen dance.

Each school should then practise their dance and film their final performance. This video should be posted to the blog by Friday 30th April 2010.

All schools should then watch the completed performances and score each school out of 10 except their own. Please publish your results either by video or text on the blog by Friday 7th May 2010. The scores will be added together and the winner posted on the blog by Monday 10th May 2010.

The winning school will be rewarded with a trophy! All schools will receive a certificate for taking part.
